Visit the San Felipe De Barajas Castle

Visitors often ask me what are must-do things in Cartagena, and the “ Castillo de San Felipe De Barajas” (San Felipe Castle) is one of them. Built-in 1536 and then expanded in 1657, it is considered one of the most impressive defensive complex of Spanish architecture. The Castle sits on top of a hill and it’s strategic location, allowed the Spanish to see the enemy approaching from sea or land. The castle has underground tunnels of more than 600 meters long. These tunnels were used in the past as storage and a hiding place when the castle was under attack. It is pretty interesting to explore them, but if you are claustrophobic it could be a bit much in some areas.

Nowadays, visitors and locals can enjoy an amazing view of Cartagena’s landscape from the top of this amazing fortress. I recommend to go around 4:00 pm, to witness a beautiful sunset and take an awesome picture with the Colombian flag in the background, note that the flag comes down at 6:00 pm sharp (except on holidays) so you want to take it before then.

Things to know:

  • Entrance fee: $25,000 COP for foreigners, children $10,500 COP and Colombians and Residents $20,000 COP and you buy the entrance fee at the gate. Colombians and residents get in for free the last Sunday of each month (with the exception of January and December).

  • Hours: Monday- Sunday from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm (except on the last Sunday of each month, which closes at 5;00 pm)

  • How to get there?: You can take a short 10 minute taxi ride from old town, or you can walk for about 20 minutes from Getsemani, but with the heat could be a bit uncomfortable, so I suggest just take a taxi, it will be around $8,000 COP.

  • Recommendations: Bring a hat, sun screen and an umbrella because it can get really hot, especially if you go around noon. Enjoy your visit!
