Visit the Islands

Most visitors spend at least a day at one of the islands around Cartagena soaking in the crystal-clear water, white sandy beaches, and water sports like snorkeling and diving. We can help you with your plans!

The Rosario Islands, an archipelago of 27 islands, are among the most popular. Some Rosario islands to note are Coralina Island, Isla Pirata, Islote (the most populated island in the world per square meter), and Isla Arena (AKA Bendita Beach).

We recommend you Fenix Beach in Tierra Bomba, Luxury Beach, Bendita Beach. Playa Blanca on Isla Baru, Cholon (party island), Isla Mucura (we recommend going overnight to this one because of the distance) and Isla Naranja part of the San Bernardo Islands.

Things to know:

  • How to get to the islands? Boat rides to the islands usually take about 45 minutes to the rosario islands, and 10 minutes to tierra bomba. Do not take the big boat to the islands, it is a waste of time and money, not to mention the seasickness you will get. Take a speed boat or a small boat and triple check with the tour company to make sure they are not taking you on a big boat. Another nice option is to hire a private boat for the day to take you to several islands. You can bring your own food and drinks, which is a great option as a group.

  • What’s included? The island day usually includes lunch and a drink. The meal is usually the typical Caribbean platter which is fish, fried plantains, coconut rice, and a salad.

  • How much? This depends on the island (s) but it could be from $70,000 COP up. If it is lower than this, then it won’t be a good experience.

  • What to bring:? Sunblock, a hat that won’t fly off during the boat ride, seasickness medication, bug repellent, your bathing suit, and a small towel (in case it’s not provided) are the basic requirements.

  • Other Recommendations:

    • Playa Blanca can get very busy because Baru island is accessible by car and is frequently visited by locals. If you can, I recommend staying there at night at one of the hostels on the beach so you can enjoy a quiet sunset and have all the beach to yourself when you wake up. If you can’t stay overnight and you go for the day, as soon as you get to the beach walk as far away from the crowds (usually to the left side) to be able to enjoy the less crowded beach areas

    • Always use the life vest, if they don’t provide you with one, ask.
